Fool me once…
In the immortal words of former President George W. Bush Jr. “Fool me once, shame on you …. If you fool me… I can’t get fooled again”
The origins of April Fool’s Day are unknown with many believing the custom began in Renaissance Europe. Over the centuries pranks have become progressively more elaborate and the media industry have really embraced trying to fool the consumers.
On the eve of April Fool’s Day we thought we’d take a look at some crackers from 2021 with South Australia really delivering the goods…
New police dog squad unleashed to snag criminals
South Australian Police unveiled a new squad of sausage dogs.
'Covertly trained over the past three months, the three purebred Dachshunds will be primarily used to search small spaces and access areas such as air conditioning vents and ducts, that traditional police German Shepherds weighing around 40kg cannot,' the police announced.
The team has a fitting name too: the Small Area Urban Search And Guided Evacuation Squad - or SAUSAGES for short.
State of Origin jumper wind-up
Sportsbet posted a photo teasing State of Origin, match one, suggesting the Queensland and New South Wales players are set to debut sleeveless jumpers.
'NSW/QLD to debut sleeveless jerseys for Origin 1 in Melbourne. Thoughts?' Sportsbet asked its 120,000 followers.
One took the bait and jumped to post 'I almost lost my s... then realised what the date is.'
It's one of the sacred differences between the main footy codes: AFL players are always in sleeveless jumpers and rugby league players always have sleeves.
Tourism Boost for Western Australia
Tourists love the beach and waterfalls - so the creative team at Perth is OK combined the two types of attractions.
Coogee beach was promoted on social media as 'Coogee Falls, only 40 minutes from the CBD'.
'Suez 2'? Ever Given grounding prompts plan for canal along Egypt-Israel border
Arguably one of the better false news stories from last year, The Guardian reported that UN officials were planning on constructing a completely new canal along the Egypt-Israel border after the Suez was blocked. The prank appeared to be taken seriously by major Turkish media outlets including BBC News Türkçe, which reported the story in their daily coverage.
Finally, this cracker from South Australian Tourism…
“Go Down South With Your Mouth”
Reviving the Nothern Territory’s (in)famous “C U in the NT” campaign (that was promptly banned), South Australia’s food, produce and wine industries developed the slogan “Go Down South With Your Mouth” and a high production TVC full of innuendo to boot…
So a friendly little warning from MyMedia to be a little discerning when consuming your media content tomorrow, we wouldn’t want you to be mistaken as a fool.
